Birdman was the last film I watched at Telluride. It was a midnight showing, so I was tired to say the least from waiting in line for films all day. However, I heard a lot of positive things about Birdman so I went.
The director of Birdman, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, made one of the most ambitious films I saw at the festival. But just because it's ambitious, doesn't always translate to a great film. The whole film is shot without a cut or edit. The camera follows different characters the whole movie. In short, the entire film is one long take. Now I love long takes when their done well (example here is in the film Atonement), but I'm not a big fan of how it was used in this film.
The acting in the film is great from the lead role Michael Keaton to the small but great role of the lawyer played by Zach Galifiankis. But the plot just didn't connect with me. To me, it felt like a film made by Hollywood and for Hollywood. Will it win some oscars? Maybe, but this was not one of the films I cared for as much as others in Telluride. From the people I talked to who watched the film, It seems you will either love it or hate it. Therefore, If someone asked me should I watch Birdman, I would say if your into strange, but ambitious filmmaking than it's at least worth a shot.
