Before the film began, Ramin Bahrani, director of 99 Homes, said that he is, "fucking angry about the financial crisis". After watching 99 Homes, it's clear he made this film because he wants other people to feel that anger.
This film is a small masterpiece. Bahrani first film, At Any Price, showed how the recession affected farmers. 99 Homes takes on the real estate industry and subprime crisis that was part of the recession. Michael Shannon, as always, is memerzing in his role as the greedy real estate broker. However, it's Andrew Garfield who shines so great in this film.
The scenes where Garfield and Shannon must evict homeowners is powerful and moving, especially when one of them is a elderly man with no one to take care of him. I haven't heard much around Telluride about this film, but it is one that will stick with you long after the credits role.
I highly recommend it. As Roger Ebert said after watching Bahrani's film At Any Price, he is "the best new American director of recent years".
